A treadmill test, commonly known as a cardiac stress test, examines how long your heart can run before an abnormal rhythm or blood flow to the heart muscle develops. It enables your doctor to observe how your heart responds to being pressed. It is a cardiac stress test that evaluates the heart's ability to endure exercise-induced stress in a controlled environment. Usually used to diagnose coronary artery disease or to determine the prognosis after a myocardial infarction (heart attack) or coronary revascularization (angioplasty or bypass surgery). A positive test indicates that the patient's ECG has changed as a result of exertion-induced angina (inadequate blood supply to the heart). It means the patient suffers from ischemic heart disease.
