Over the last decade, the use of echocardiography as an imaging technique has expanded dramatically. The majority of echocardiography studies are performed by cardiologists, with internists being the second most prevalent providers (15 percent of all Medicare charges submitted for the procedure). The purpose of this article is to give doctors a quick overview of echocardiography's core principles and instrumentation. Because neither bone nor air is an excellent transmission medium for ultrasonic waves, the heart is imaged using certain windows (e.g., apical, parasternal, subcostal, and suprasternal).
